Southwestern vs. Lincoln County

The Southwestern Warriors improved to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in district play as they defeated Lincoln County 37-7 Friday night at the Reservation.  The Patriots took the opening kickoff all the way to the Southwestern four yard line before back to back stops by the Warrior defense.  On third and one from the four, Lincoln County runner Tra Carey was stopped for no gain.  Then on fourth down, quarterback Tanner Mcaninch bobbled the snap and tried running around the right end but was dragged down for a loss.  After the turnover on downs, the Warriors took only one play to score.  Sophomore receiver J.P. Vaught took a forward pitch at the eight yard line and weaved his way down the right sideline for a 92 yard touchdown reception from senior signal caller Brandon Pruitt.  The two point attempt was good but was nullified on a penalty.  William Avina’s point after kick was no good and Southwestern led 6-0.

Their second touchdown came when Patric Edwards broke free for a 75 yard run.  The Avina point after was good and Southwestern led 13-0.  The Warriors would stretch the lead to 20-0 as Vaught broke free again, this time from 56 yards away.  Avina nailed the point after and the lead stood at 20-0.  Southwestern would get more points before half time as Avina nailed a 25 yard field goal with five seconds left until halftime and the Warriors led 23-0.

Starting the second half, Edwards would score his second touchdown on the night as he took it in from six yards away.  The Avina point after made the score 30-0 in favor of the Warriors.  Pruitt would secure a running clock and a victory on their next possession as he scored from four yards away.  Avina was true again and Southwestern led 37-0.  Lincoln County managed to put up a touchdown late as Mcaninch hit Josh Salyers in the back corner of the end zone from 15 yards away.  Emma Kaiser added the point after and the final score would be 37-7.

Edwards led the Southwestern rushing attack as he carried the ball 10 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns.  Pruitt finished the night with 254 yards passing on 10-16 attempts with two touchdowns and one interception.  J. P. Vaught surpassed the single season receiving mark for yardage at Southwestern.  On the night, Vaught caught three passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.  With the 158 yards, Vaught now has 875 yards on the season, surpassing the old record held by D.T. Boon.  On the year, Vaught has 29 catches for 875 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Defensively, Austin Dalton recorded a sack and recovered a fumble.  Three other Warriors, Drew Sawyers, Chuck Burton and Devin Strunk, also recovered fumbles as Southwestern forced four turnovers on the night.
