Southwestern vs. Letcher County

The Southwestern Warriors advanced to the second round of the 5A state playoffs with Friday night’s 49-0 shutout victory over the Letcher County Central Cougars in a game marred by a third quarter incident that resulted in the ejection of five players, three from Southwestern and two from Letcher Central. Southwestern would have a slow start but that wouldn’t last long. Letcher Central took the opening kickoff but was unable to get a first down. On fourth down, the Cougar punt traveled only four yards and Southwestern was in business on the Cougar 42 yard line. Southwestern couldn’t take advantage and turned the ball over on downs. On Letcher Central’s second drive, Drew Whitaker picked off a tipped ball and the Warriors started their second drive on the Cougar 28 yard line. Patric Edwards would cap off the drive with a four yard touchdown run and with William Avina’s point after Southwestern led 7-0. On the next Southwestern possession the Warriors would tally another touchdown as Edwards broke free for a 40 yard run. Avina nailed the point after and Southwestern led 14-0 after the first quarter. William Lemmon would do the bulk of the work for the Warriors in the second quarter as he scored back to back touchdowns on runs of eight and 12 yards. Avina remained true on the points after and Southwestern built their lead to 28-0 before Brandon Pruitt connected with JP Vaught on the Warrior’s next possession for a 46 yard touchdown. Ermina Ramic’s point after made it 35-0. With 2:20 remaining in the first half, Drew Sawyers scored from one yard away and with Ramic’s point after the halftime score was 42-0 in favor of the Warriors.
With their first drive of the second half, and with a running clock, Southwestern marched down the field where Treavor Brock flashed a left trigger spin move for an eight yard touchdown run. Ramic added the point after and the Warriors lead climbed to 49-0. That’s when, for a few moments, chaos reigned. On what seemed like a simple run off right tackle, a member of the Cougars ended up on top of Justin Ruth, throwing punches. As the officials threw flags, the skirmish continued as another Cougar threw punches at Cameron Miller. Before order was restored, coaches from both teams were trying to keep order on the sidelines as chaos continued on the field. In the end, following a long break and deputies taking the field as well to maintain the peace, five players were ejected. Letcher County Central lost Noah Brock and Tanner Lucas, while Southwestern lost Miller, Bobby Allin and Drew Whitaker. KHSAA will have final word on possible suspensions this week.
The final score was 49-0 in a game dominated by Southwestern in every aspect. Southwestern rushed for 347 yards on 34 carries and saw six players rush for more than 30 yards. Lemmon had nine carries for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Edwards added 70 yards on five carries with two scores. Braylon Smalley added 49 yards on four carries. Drew Sawyers had 42 yards on four carries with a touchdown. Austin Barnes added 40 yards on five carries and Treavor Brock netted 35 yards on three carries with a touchdown. Pruitt finished the night going 7-12 for 104 yards with a touchdown. JP Vaught led all receivers with four catches for 82 yards and score.
Defensively, the Warriors were dominant. Southwestern held the Cougars to 43 yards rushing on 25 carries and only 42 yards passing with two interceptions. Letcher Central managed only 85 yards of total offense. Southwestern also finished with four sacks. One each for Floyd Fannin, Austin Dalton, and Kody Price while Austin Barnes and Braylon Smalley added half a sack each. Drew Whitaker and Treavor Brock had interceptions for Southwestern.
