Sophomore records sixth-best discus mark in Kentucky track and field history

Evans Finishes Seventh in Discus at National Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky sophomore thrower Andrew Evans saved his best for last, finishing seventh Wednesday in the discus with a career-best mark of 193-03/58.91m at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Evans’ mark is the sixth-best in program history.

Facing the best of the best, Evans rose to the occasion, throwing a career-best mark of 193-03/58.91m to finish seventh in the event and earn the Wildcats’ men’s team two points. Evans’ career-best throw was on his second attempt of the day, and only adds to his already fantastic season.

A native of Portage, Mich., Evans won the discus at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning All-SEC First Team honors in the process. Kentucky has won the men’s discus title at the SEC Championships in each of the last five years now.

Evans was UK’s only competitor at the national championships Wednesday. Freshman thrower Raymond Dykstra and junior distance runner Luis Orta will compete Thursday at Drake Stadium. Dykstra will compete in the javelin, while Orta will run in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Dykstra, a Second Team All-SEC performer and All-SEC Freshman Team selection in the javelin, qualified for the championships with a mark of 222-09/67.91m. Dykstra, like Evans, finished eighth at the east preliminary.

Orta, who was a Second Team All-SEC performer in the 3,000m steeplechase, qualified for the championships behind a career-best time of 8:44.25, which is the second-fastest 3,000m steeplechase recorded in Kentucky history.
Dykstra will throw Thursday at 3:30 p.m. ET and Orta will run in the semifinals of the 3,000m steeplechase on Thursday at 8:25 p.m.
