Murray State softball suffered its first loss in the OVC Championships Thursday night, falling 7-1 against tournament host and #1 seed UT Martin at Bettye Giles Field in Martin, Tenn.

The Skyhawks scored one in the bottom of the first as Leah Taylor scored from second on a throwing error as UTM recorded hits in three of its first four at-bats.

Murray State tied the game up in the top of the third, scoring one on aChristian Cox home run to left. The homer, a few feet to the right of the left field foul pole, was the junior’s first of her career.

UT Martin responded with six hits in its half of the third, including a two-run double from Jenny Bain, scoring five to jump ahead 6-1. They would add a run to their total in the bottom of the fifth on a ground out with two runners on.

The loss knocks the Racers into single elimination for the remainder of the three-day tournament.  Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky kick off action in the bottom half of the bracket Friday morning, with the winner of that game advancing to face Eastern Illinois. The victor moves on to play Murray State Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
