Mercy Ends Lone Oak’s Run

Lone OakOWENSBORO, KY (6/11/12) – 4th ranked Mercy Academy (36-8) defeated 17th ranked Lone Oak High School (40-6) 7-2 in the 2012 Rawlings/KHSAA State Softball Tournament Championship game on Saturday.

The Rawlings/KHSAA State Softball Tournament was played at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro, Kentucky.

This was Mercy’s first ever Rawlings/KHSAA State Softball Tournament Championship. They had previously been runners up three times before winning it all on Saturday. This was Lone Oak’s first final in school history.

Mercy got things rolling in the bottom of the first. Mercy scored three runs before Lone Oak could record an out. Meyer hit a double to start game off the game, stole third and scored off a single by Ellington on the next play. Vobrink hit a triple to drive in Ellington. Francis, then hit a single to drive in Vobrink.

In the second inning, Mercy scored one more run to make it 4-0 after two innings. Things remained quiet until the sixth inning.

Lone Oak threatened in the top of the sixth inning by scoring two runs to make the score 4-2.  Dillon hit an RBI double that drove in Kreuter. Dillion would then steal third and score on an RBI groundout by Waldon before Mercy retired the side.

But, Mercy answered back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Two of the runs were unearned. Downey scored off a single by Lasley. Mercy would successfully attempt a double steal with Lasley stealing second and French stealing third. On the very next play, Meyer drove in Lasley and French on an error by Lone Oak.

Lone Oak hit a single to start the 7th inning before pitcher Leigh Ellen Thomas sealed the deal by retiring the next three hitters.

JJ Francis picked up the win for Mercy by pitching five innings and only allowing two runs while striking out two. Jenny Chapman picked up the loss for Lone Oak by pitching a complete game and allowing seven runs, four earned, and striking out four.

The loss ended Lone Oak’s season with a 40-6 record and being state runners up. Mercy was the only team to beat Lone Oak in the State Tournament. Mercy defeated Lone Oak 7-2 on Friday as well. The state tournament is a double elimination tournament. Had Lone Oak won, they would have had to of beaten Mercy a second time in a game right after that.
