Madisonville Edges Owensboro 8-7 | Pirates

Madisonville Pirates 8, Owensboro Oilers 7

The host Owensboro Oilers lost to the visiting Tradewater Pirates from Madisonville on Sunday night in 12 innings. The final score was 8 to 7.

The Pirates opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the 4th inning. Justin Riddle and Blake Massey walked consecutively to start the inning and both would eventually score on passed balls without a hit recorded in the inning. The Oilers rallied to take the lead with four runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Jordan Rhodes walked to lead off the inning and Josh Salmon followed with a single. One out later, Rhodes scored on a RBI single by Matt Johnson. Malduino Gonzalez walked, positioning Salmon to come in on an RBI single by Colin Buckner. Austin Edge followed with a RBI single of his of his own for Johnson’s score, and set up Gonzalez to come across on a RBI groundout by Tyler Tichenor.. After four innings it was Oilers 4 to 2.

Madisonville reclaimed the lead with one run in each of the next three visitor innings. In the top of the 5th inning Travis Haggard singled, stole second base, advanced to third base, and scored on a RBI groundout by Logan Leverett. In the top of the 6th inning Riddle walked, stole second base, and scored on an errant attempt to record the second out. The Pirates made it 5 to 4 in their favor with the run in the top of the 7th inning. With two out, Madisonville loaded the bases by sandwiching a single between two Oilers errors. Then Massey was hit by a pitch for an RBI to plate Leverett from third base.

Owenboro rallied for multiple runs again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to take over again at 7 to 5. After a leadoff single was erased by a fielder’s choice that left Tichenor on first base, he stole second base and scored on a RBI single by Taylor Mathews. Mathews was cut down trying for second base. Rhodes followed with a walk and Salmon topped that by pounding a 2 RBI home run over the left field wall.

The Pirates overcame the Oilers lead in the top of the 9th and got the two runs it took to force extra innings. With one out, Cody Hyden and Riddle both doubled, as Riddle collected an RBI. A walk and a fielder’s choice brought the Oilers within one out of a win , but put Riddle on third base. He scored on a RBI singe by Ethan Blumenthal.

Madisonville got their go ahead run in the top of the 12th inning. Blumenthal was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He was bunted over to second base, reached third base on an error, and scored on a RBI groundout by Cole Fergus. The Oilers managed to get a runner to second base in the bottom half of the 12th inning, but no further. The winning pitcher was Pirate reliever Corey Ames. Oilers reliever Jay Hachimiester pitched well over the last three innings, but was stuck with the loss.
