MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns was not enough for the Lindsey Wilson College football team today as the Blue Raiders fell 43-41 to host Faulkner (Ala.) University at John Mark Stallings Field.

Faulkner’s Josh Hollingsworth connected with Chris Kordakis with a little more than eight minutes left in the game to send the Eagles (3-1 overall and 2-0 Mid-South Conference West) to the win.

The game-winning touchdown capped off a game that featured eight lead changes.

A chance at a ninth lead change never materialized due to a fluke rule that ended the game with a 10-second run-off.

Trailing by two points in the waning seconds of the game, Lindsey Wilson‘s Branden Cresapfound Ben Madon in the middle of the field for a 32-yard completion to the Faulkner 44-yard line.

The Blue Raiders looked to have one last chance with 1.4 seconds left in the game.

But during the completion and subsequent tackle, Madon lost his helmet forcing the officials to assess a 10-second run-off of the clock — thus ending the game.

Lindsey Wilson falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the MSC West Division.

After following behind early 6-0, the Blue Raiders scored 17 of the next 20 points to take a 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The first Lindsey Wilson score came in record-setting fashion.

Cortez Barber scored on a 95-yard kickoff return to give the Blue Raiders the 7-6 lead. The 95 yards is a program record erasing a 94-yard return set during Lindsey Wilson’s inaugural season.

Mark Corbett extended the Lindsey Wilson lead to 10-6 with a 32-yard field goal with 7:48 left in the first quarter. Corbett ended the day 2-for-3 on field goals.

Following a field goal by Faulkner’s Jacob Smith, Eric Shaw nearly matched Barber’s return with a score of his own off a kickoff. Shaw’s 93-yard return pushed the Blue Raider lead to 17-9.

A pair of Hollingsworth touchdown tosses highlighted the Eagles second quarter comeback. Hollingsworth finished the game 39-of-49 for 454 yards and four touchdowns.

Despite an Edwin Thomas touchdown run and a second Corbett field goal, Lindsey Wilson trailed 30-27 at the break.

Lindsey Wilson needed just one play on its second offensive series of the second half to regain the lead.

Cresap hit Rome Cotton out of the backfield for a 77-yard catch and run to give the Blue Raiders a 34-30 lead.

Hollingsworth and the Eagle offense answered with a 12-play, 82-yard drive to go in front 37-34 at the end of three quarters. Faulkner finished the game with 583 yards of total offense.

The final Lindsey Wilson score came on its longest drive of the afternoon as Tyrome Lott scored from two yards out to push the Blue Raiders ahead 41-37. Lott’s run ended a 15-play, 80-yard march leaving 9:25 left on the clock.

Faulkner needed 1:21 for the game-winning drive.

Trailing 43-41, the Blue Raiders had two opportunities to score.

A fumble stopped the first drive — the lone Lindsey Wilson turnover of the day — and a chance at a desperation pass was thwarted due to the helmet mishap.

Lindsey Wilson finished with 318 yards on the day and — thanks to three quick-strike touchdowns — 22 fewer plays from the line of scrimmage.

In addition to a pair of special team touchdowns, the Blue Raiders recorded two blocked extra point attempts and a blocked field goal — the latter setting up the final Lindsey Wilson drive.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 29, as they travel to University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) in Williamsburg, Ky.
