COLUMBIA, Ky. — Saturday marks the return of football to Blue Raider Stadium as Lindsey Wilson College hosts Union (Ky.) College in the 2012 home opener.

The Blue Raiders hope to erase the memory of last week’s disappointing 27-20 overtime loss at Kentucky Christian University against a Bulldog team that is opening its season on Saturday.

Union is coming off a hard-luck 2-9 campaign in 2011 where the Bulldogs lost five times by 10 or fewer points.

“You are going to have a tough time finding a more talented team with the type of record they had last season,” LWC’s Coach Oliver said. “They had some bad luck, but I know that last season will have no bearing on Saturday’s game.”

Union’s bad luck began in the Bulldogs’ season opener when starting quarterback Mike Brinkley suffered a season-ending knee injury. Brinkley returns for his finals season after throwing for 2,186 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2010.

The Lindsey Wilson defense — that held the Bulldogs out of the endzone in last season’s 20-6 win in Barbourville — will also have a keen eye on senior running back Rob Brown. Brown rushed for 140 yards in last season’s game and ended 2011 averaging more than 100 yards on the ground per game while scoring 12 times.

Lindsey Wilson is coming off a solid performance defensively at Kentucky Christian where the Blue Raiders allowed just 13 points in regulation and limited the Knights to 320 yards of total offense for the game.

While the defense played well last week, the Lindsey Wilson offense struggled to find its rhythm en route to producing 245 total yards of offense.

“We have to play better and we will play better offensively,” Oliver said. “We look forward to the challenge of getting better every game.

“Saturday is our next opportunity to do just that.”

Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.  The game can be seen beginning at 12:45 p.m. CT with the pregame show.
