Colonels | Baseball Heads to Morehead for OVC Weekend Series

RICHMOND, Ky. | The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team hits the road for the first time in nearly a month as it faces the Morehead State Eagles in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend in Morehead, Ky.

Game one of the series is set for a 3 p.m. start on Friday. The Saturday game will get underway at 2 p.m., and the series finale on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Colonels (13-9, 1-2 OVC) have won seven of their last 10 games, most recently taking two out of three from Chicago State over the weekend and besting Northern Kentucky in a mid-week matchup.

Eastern’s offense is led by reigning OVC Player of the Week and Madness National Player of the Week Ben Fisher, and his OVC and NCAA leading nine home runs and 33 runs scored. Fisher also leads the OVC in RBIs with 32, and has the second most hits with 35. Daniel McFarland’s .464 batting average is second best in the OVC, and eighth in the NCAA. Shea Sullivan ranks fifth in the OVC in RBIs with 25, while ranking third in hits with 33.

The Eagles (14-6, 5-1 OVC) beat No. 27 Mississippi State earlier this season and are coming off a series win over Belmont this past weekend. Morehead is led by Braxton Morris’ .446 batting average and 20 RBIs. Niko Hulsizer has five home runs and 19 RBIs for them on the season.

The game on Friday will see the pitchers with the two best ERAs facing off, as OVC leader Aaron Leasher and his 2.31 average takes the mound for Morehead and second place Jack Piekos will bring his 2.67 average to the bump for Eastern. Sophomore Aaron Ochsenbein will pitch for Eastern on Saturday, while Eric Nerl gets the start on Sunday.
