Centre defeats Covenant 3-1 in Bob Allen Classic


The Centre men’s soccer team began play in the 23rd Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic with a 3-1 victory over Covenant College on Saturday in Danville, Ky.

Behind two goals from Cameron Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.) and another from Zac Brown (Nicholasville, Ky.) the Colonels got out to a 3-0 lead and held on for the victory.

Miller’s first goal came in the 25th minute when he took a pass from Robbe Tarver (Houston, Texas) and fired a shot from outside the box past Covenant goalkeeper Shuler Polk. Ten minutes later,Connor Reed (Los Angeles, Calif.) found Brown on the right side of the box, and Brown chipped the ball over the keeper’s head for a 2-0 lead.

After taking that 2-0 lead to halftime, Centre struck once more in the 59th minute when Ryan Garvey(Louisville, Ky.) played a ball through the Covenant defense and Miller finished for the score. With 22 minutes remaining in the contest, Garrison Dale picked up Covenant’s only goal.

Centre was able to create several scoring chances on the night and outshot Covenant 21-12. Polk made four saves in goal for Covenant while Zach Sosnovich (Woodbridge, N.J.) made three stops for Centre.

Play will continue in the Allen Classic with two more games Saturday. Spalding and Covenant will meet at 4 p.m. while Emory, a 4-0 winner over Spalding in Friday’s first game, will take on Centre at 6 p.m.
