BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College men’s basketball team jumped five spots in the latest NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll to land at No. 6.

The NAIA announced the latest poll on Tuesday. The third regular-season edition will be released on Jan. 10.

The Bulldogs (12-3 overall, 6-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) garnered 242 total voting points to jump form No. 11 to No. 6. Union finished just ahead of Northwest Christian (Ore.) and Taylor (Ind.), which tied for seventh with each receiving 238 voting points. Rochester (Mich.) is close behind at No. 9 with 237 voting points.

Union is tied with No. 1 Cornerstone (Mich.) and No. 2 St. Francis (Ind.) for the third-most wins at 12. Only Rochester with 15 wins and No. 4 Northwestern (Iowa) with 14 have more.

The Bulldogs are currently on a 10-game winning streak. During the streak, Union is winning by an average of 23.8 points with all but three games being decided by 20 or more points.

On the season, Union ranks seventh in NAIA Division II in scoring margin (19.067). In all, the Bulldogs rank in the top 10 nationally in 13 statistical categories, including second in total steals (152), third in total blocks (66), third in total rebounds (653), fifth in total assists (260) and sixth in total points (1,336).

Individually, Gerrard Newby (SR/Lexington, Ky. ) leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 22.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He also paces the team with 33 steals and 25 blocks. Newby ranks nationally in several categories including third in total steals, third in total rebounds (158), fourth in total points (335), sixth in rebounds per game, and 10th in points per game.

Tyrone Sherman (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.) ranks third nationally in total assists (92), sixth in total steals (30), and seventh in assists per game (6.133). He also averages 10.5 points per game.
Paul Stone (SR/Danville, Va.) is second on the team in scoring at 18.8 points per game, and he ranks 10th nationally in total rebounds (128) and 15th in total points (282). Stone averaged 8.5 rebounds per game as well.

Sam Natt (SR/Los Angeles, Calif.) is the only other Bulldog to average double digits in scoring at 10.1 points per game, but Lance Blakely (SO/Lexington, Ky.) is not far away from joining the club at 9.1 points per game.

Union does not return to the hardwood until Saturday, Dec. 31, when it plays host to Brescia (Ky.) in non-conference action. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
