WKU Wins At Ball State

It seems right that the Summer of 2012 is heading down to its final days. Don’t tell that to the Western Kentucky Soccer team as their play continues to be hotter than a Midwestern Summer day.

The team left the friendly confines of the WKU Campus and headed to Indiana to play in the Ball State Tournament at the Briner Sports Complex and the players continue to have hot feet.

WKU shutout Xavier 3-0 and then edged Northern Kentucky 2-1, in the first ever meeting between the two in-state schools.
Getting to the Xavier contest, WKU owned them like a little kid with an ice cream cone on a hot and muggy day. The ‘Toppers fired the soccer ball like a missile at the opposition taking 25 shots en route to the shutout.

“I really liked the way we played today,” said head coach Jason Neidell. “Our girls came out and had two goals for the game today. One was to win the possession battle and the other was to win 50/50 battle. I thought we did a terrific job possessing the ball today. It was hot out here today, playing on the turf, and by possessing the ball like we did today, we wore them down.”

Allie Auscherman, who was making a trip home to the state known for Andrew Luck and the Indy 500, scored the game winning goal in the 30th minute of the game. She also helped her cause just a little bit earlier, as she caught a pass from Amanda Buechel via Chrissy Tchoula to score the game’s opening goal.

The win marked the 130th for Neidell as coach of the Lady Toppers.

While the team shuout Xavier in the first game, Northern Kentucky avoided a shutout sweep by WKU. Buechel scored both goals for WKU, including her 20th career one as WKU edged their northern neighbors 2-1. She’s only the sixth player in school history to record 20 career goals. You might want to keep the Auscherman to Buechel line handy, as the sophomore found the senior with a pass that then sailed into the back of the net early with a 1-0 lead.

Buechel’s second goal came in the final stages of the contest.

The Lady Toppers hit the road Labor Day weekend with a stop at the Minnesota Tournament. The will play Bowling Green and Minnesota respectively.
