Wesleyan visits Kentucky State | Kentucky Wesleyan

Kentucky WesleyanGame Notes

Kentucky Wesleyan will try to shake off the effects of a 40-10 season-opening loss to Walsh when it visits Frankfort today for a battle with in-state foe Kentucky State.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Coach Brent Holsclaw‘s Panthers (0-1), who opened their season on Aug. 29 at Steele Stadium, broke from the gate quickly against Walsh — getting a 21-yard scoring pass from Will Barnes to Joey Kramer to take a 7-0 lead.

Walsh responded, however, by scoring the next 40 points, before KWC place-kicker Matt Wilson booted a 29-yard field goal inside the final six minutes to account for the final margin.

KWC is led by running back Brett Leary (53 yards, 11 carries), receiver Jeff Ward (10 receptions, 71 yards) and quarterback Barnes (23-of-38, 176 yards, TD), who all had their moments against Walsh.

Kentucky State, playing its season-opener, defeated the Panthers 23-7 last season at Steele Stadium.

The Thorobreds are led by sophomore running back Justin Williams, who is coming off a big freshman season that included 518 yards on 99 attempts (5.2 yards per carry). Williams also had 22 pass receptions for 218 yards and three touchdowns in 2011.

Kentucky State enjoyed a 6-4 season last fall.
