COLUMBIA, Ky. — Two seasons ago, the Lindsey Wilson College men’s soccer team lost its last game.

Since the upset in the opening round of the 2010 NAIA National Championship, the Blue Raiders have rattled off 23 straight wins, won their ninth national title and head into the 2012 season as the preseason favorite to defend its championship.

“Having that championship banner to defend can only help us going forward,” said Lindsey Wilson head coach Ray Wells. “We don’t relax and rest on our laurels, you have to develop and try new things. We’re going to be moving forward and trying out best.”

The first test of the season comes Tuesday night, which is also the Mid-South Conference opener, as Pikeville (Ky.) comes to town for a 7 p.m. start at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Also getting its start Tuesday night will be Lindsey Wilson’s partnership with Stretch Internet, providing a high-quality online stream of all the action with integrated live stats and future possibilities for live blogs and chats.

Against MSC teams during the regular-season, the top-ranked Blue Raiders have flirted with perfection, posting a 64-3-2 record.

The Bears are coming off a 4-13 campaign in 2011 in which they lost to Lindsey Wilson twice, 10-0 late in the season and 8-1 in the MSC Championship first round.

Life may not get any easier for opponents as Lindsey Wilson returns a large core of starters and adds a list of highly talented newcomers.

The early Aug. 21 start could be a concern for many programs, but many of the newcomers were on campus last spring, making for an easier adjustment period getting acclimated on the pitch.

“We wanted to get going early, because we knew we had most of the guys back from last year,” said Wells. “The system wasn’t changing, so we felt we could play a little earlier than usual.”

Playing a team in the MSC to open the season is another unusual element.

“Once again, we wanted to get out the gate early and Pikeville wanted to get going as well,” said Wells.

Helping Lindsey Wilson get off to a good start will be senior forward Lebogang Moloto.

Moloto had a dream season in 2011, delivering the game-winning goal in the championship, followed by being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and earning First Team NAIA All-American honors.

The native of South Africa posted 11 goals and nine assists a year ago and will lead a potent offensive attack onto the field Tuesday night against Pikevile.
