(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College women’s soccer team posted its third straight shutout as it defeated Heidelberg University, 6-0, today (Sunday, September 9, 2012) in a non-conference match at The Bank of Kentucky Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints remain undefeated as they improve to 4-0 overall. With the loss, the Student Princes fall to 0-4.
Thomas More took an early 1-0 lead when senior forward Lauren Wietmarschen(Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sam Work(Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) at the 12:57 mark. The Saints increased the lead to 2-0 at the 34:12 mark as senior defender Abby Gindling (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) scored on a header off an assist from freshman midfielder Amanda Hagedorn (Ross, Ohio/Ross).
Less than a minute into the second half, junior midfielder Emily Sanker (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) increased the Saints’ lead to 3-0 when she scored on an assist from freshman forward Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) at the 45:30 mark. Huber scored unassisted at the 47:12 mark to extend the lead to 4-0. Senior midfielder Chrissy Sonderman (Independence, Ky./Holy Cross) scored at the 72:11 mark off a cross from Wietmarschen to increase the lead to 5-0. Junior forwardCourtney Clark (Burlington, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) closed out the scoring at the 74:33 mark when she found the back of the net off an assist from junior midfielderKirstie Reilman (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) for the final score of 6-0.
Freshman goalkeeper Abbie McBride (Lakeville, Ind./LaVille) earned the win as she played the first 72:11 and recorded two saves. Freshman goalkeeper Torie Gangwish(Independence, Ky./Holy Cross) played the final 17:49 and had two saves.
The Saints out-shot the Student Princes, 26-5, including 13-4 on-goal. Thomas More also won the battle of corner kicks, 5-1.
Thomas More returns to action on Friday (September 14) when it hosts Berry College at 4 p.m. at The Bank of Kentucky Field.
