Stoops: Cats’ Coach | UK

Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops has agreed to become the next head coach at the University of Kentucky, according to UK director of athletics Mitch Barnhart.

UK fired Joker Phillips over a week ago and reportedly has been targeting Stoops since that time. A report from CBS claimed Stoops interviewed for the position on Saturday.

UK“I am thrilled to be named the head football coach at the University of Kentucky,” Stoops said in a press release.  “My family and I are excited and looking forward to becoming a part of the Big Blue Nation.”

Barnhart said about his new hire, “Mark’s passion has been evident in the way he coaches and in his love for the game of football.  That passion carried over into our process and his desire to wear the Blue and White.  Our desire to get better defensively and continue to expand our recruiting base helped guide us to Mark.  He comes from a coaching family and has been in big games and big atmospheres throughout his career.  That has prepared him for this opportunity to become head coach at Kentucky.  We welcome Mark, Chantel (Stoops’ wife), Will and Zack (Stoops’ sons) to the Big Blue Nation.”

The Youngstown, Ohio native, Stoops most recently served as the defensive coordinator for the Seminoles under Jimbo Fisher since 2009. The unit was ranked No. 4 last season and was considered the top-ranked defensive squad in the country up until last week.  It is currently ranked No. 3.

Surprisingly, UK now has a defensive mind at the helm instead of the offensive direction most thought the school would go. The Wildcats defense ranked 11th in the SEC this season, following a ranking of 10th last year.

As Mark Stoops takes over as the head football coach for the University of Kentucky, the new era for the Wildcats taps into the bloodline of one of the most famous families in college football in order to get back on track.  Mark is the younger brother of Oklahoma head coach, Bob Stoops. He also has two other brothers in coaching, Mike is the current defensive coordinator at Oklahoma and Ron Stoops, Jr. is a linebackers coach at Youngstown State.

Stoops head coaching salary has not been disclosed as of yet, but was reportedly paid around $700,000 at FSU as its D- coordinator.

He is suspected to bring along another FSU assistant as part of the coaching staff.
