Southwestern vs. South Laurel

The Southwestern Warriors improved to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in district play as they defeated South Laurel Friday night 62-20 on the road.  The Warriors took the opening kickoff and scored after running only two offensive plays.  William Lemmon scored on a 20 yard run following a 42 yard Brandon Pruitt to Drew Sawyers pass.  William Avina added the point after and Southwestern led 7-0.  The defense would get the ball back for Southwestern less than two minutes later as Patric Edwards stepped in front of a Jared Grubb third down pass attempt, intercepting the ball at the South Laurel 28 yard line.  On the next play from scrimmage, Lemmon took the hand-off 28 yards for his second touchdown on the night.  Avina added the point after and the Warriors led 14-0.  After a punt from the Cardinals on their next possession, Southwestern marched down the field before Pruitt hooked up with J.P. Vaught on a nifty one handed touchdown grab from 18 yards away.  Avina split the uprights once again and the Warrior lead was 21-0.
South Laurel would answer as Grubb ran 13 yards for a score on the Cardinals next possession.  Conner Wilson’s point after attempt was block and the Warrior lead stood at 21-6 with only 57 seconds left in the first quarter.  Southwestern would answer with another one play drive.  Pruitt found Vaught once again and with only 37 seconds left in the first quarter, Southwestern led 28-6 after Avina’s point after.  The score would remain the same until just under three minutes remained in the first half.  Lemmon would score on a four yard run with 2:40 remaining.  Avina added the point after and Southwestern led 35-6.  Southwestern would tack on another touchdown with 51 seconds remaining in the half as Vaught caught his third touchdown pass of the night, this one from 16 yards away.  Avina’s PAT was blocked and Southwestern led 41-6.  On the last play of the half, South Laurel’s Grubb fired a deep ball intended for Mathew Dalton.  Warrior defender Chuck Burton batted the ball into the air and Drew Sawyers picked it off at the eight yard line, weaved in and out of traffic before finding the left sideline for a 92 yard interception return for touchdown.  The Avina point after gave the Warriors a 48-6 halftime lead and a running clock in the second half.
After South Laurel opened the half and turned the ball over on downs, Lemmon scored his fourth and final touchdown of the night on a 22 yard run.  Avina added the point after and Southwestern led 55-6.  Southwestern would score again on their next possession as Braylon Smalley scored on a 62 yard touchdown run.  With Avina’s PAT it was Southwestern leading 62-6 with 2:09 remaining in the third period.
South Laurel would not quit.  On their next possession, Grubb hit a streaking Dalton for a 78 yard touchdown catch.  The two point attempt failed and Southwestern had a 62-12 lead.  The final score of the game came with 13 seconds remaining as Grubb hit Ace Allen on an 11 yard pass.  Allen would also catch the two point conversion and the final score was 62-20.
Lemmon led the Warriors in rushing with 80 yards on seven carries with four touchdowns.  Brandon Pruitt was 9-12 passing for 192 yards and three touchdowns.  JP Vaught was the leading receiver for Southwestern with 112 yards and three touchdowns on only five catches.  Vaught also had two touchdowns called back on penalties in the game.  The Southwestern defense logged five sacks on the night, one each by Patric Edwards, William Lemmon, Floyd Fannin, Austin Dalton and Isaiah Baker.  Edwards and Sawyers each had an interception.  Kody Price recovered a fumble, forced by Edwards with a hit on Grubb in the second quarter.  Austin Dalton also added a blocked punt.  Southwestern returns to the reservation next Friday night to face Lincoln County in a district contest.  Coverage begins around 7:15 on MVPSportschannel.com
