Southwestern vs. Knox Central | Warriors

The Southwestern Warriors improved to 2-1 on the season with Friday night’s 34-20 win over Knox Central in the Appalachian Bowl at Clay County.  The Warriors scored first on the first of two William Lemmon touchdowns, a two yard run.  The two point attempt was no good and the Warriors led 6-0.  Knox Central answered when Donavan Arthur scored on a two yard run of his own.  The point after was blocked and the score was tied at six.  Following a Troy Beirman interception, Knox Central was marching down the field when star junior running back Jermel Carton suffered a knee injury.  The Panthers marched down the field and Arthur scampered in from 23 yards away for his second touchdown.  The point after gave Knox Central a 13-6 lead, one they would take to the half.

In the second half, Knox Central took the kick off and managed a couple of first downs before being forced to punt.  The Warriors didn’t take long to tie things up as Brandon Pruitt hooked up with J.P. Vaught on a 44 yard scoring pass.  The point after tied the game at 13.  Southwestern took the lead on their next possession as Pruitt hooked up with Vaught again, this time from 64 yards away.  The point after made it 20-13 in favor of Southwestern.  Knox Central wasn’t done though.  The Panthers drove down the field and concluded the drive as Arthur scored his third touchdown of the night, this time from six yards away, tying the game at 20.

That’s when the Warrior offense asserted itself once again.  Patric Edwards broke free from 18 yards away and scored the go-ahead touchdown.  With the point after, Southwestern lead 27-20.  That’s when the Warrior defense forced their lone turnover on the night, a Chuck Burton interception.  Southwestern methodically marched down the field, and finished off the night with Lemmon’s second touchdown, a one yard run to give the Warriors a 34-20 victory.

On the night J.P. Vaught , who last week set the school’s single game receiving yardage mark with 232, got the second highest in school history with Friday night’s 181 yards on six catches with two touchdowns.  Edwards was over the century mark once again, rushing for 111 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown.  Pruitt finished off a nice evening with 295 passing yards on 16-22 with two touchdowns and his first interception of the year.  Floyd Fannin recorded two sacks for the Warrior defense.  Southwestern will travel to Mercer County next Friday night.  Coverage begins around 7:15 on MVPsportschannel.com
