Lindsey Wilson Baseball Clinches MSC Regular Season Title with Sweep of St. Catharine

ST. CATHARINE, Ky. — The Lindsey Wilson College baseball team captured the program’s first Mid-South Conference regular season title today with a sweep of host St. Catharine (Ky.) College at Edelen-Haydon Field.

With the 8-5 and 6-1 wins, the No. 13-ranked Blue Raiders completes the MSC regular season with a 17-4 conference record. Lindsey Wilson’s .810 winning percentage cannot be surpassed with one conference weekend remaining in the regular season.

While the rest of the conference plays countable games next weekend, the Blue Raiders travel to West Virginia University Tech for a four-game series that will not count against their conference record. Tech is ineligible for postseason play in 2012 and its games do not count in the MSC standings.

Today, Darren Travers and Lance Rose pitched complete games in the doubleheader sweep to run the Lindsey Wilson winning streak to 20 straight.

Travers improved to 7-1 on the season throwing 147 pitches — 99 for strikes — in the 8-5 win in the opener. Rose moved to 4-0 this season after hurling a three-hit gem in the Blue Raiders’ 6-1 win — their 13th straight conference win.

Manuel Ozoria was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Leandro Perez, Adam Peacock and Manuel Alonso each added two hits at the top of the order to lead the Blue Raider offense.

The Blue Raiders grabbed a 3-0 lead in their first two at-bats only to have the Patriots (30-21, 9-8 in the MSC) battle back and take a 4-3 lead.

Lindsey Wilson (35-10, 17-4) responded with a five-run seventh en route to the 8-5 win.

Travers allowed five earned runs while scattering 15 hits. He fanned eight while issuing no walks.

In the nightcap, Rose was stellar from the beginning as he finished with seven strikeouts and no walks in the seven-inning complete-game win.

The Blue Raider offense methodically built their lead with a run in each of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning.

Perez had three hits in the game while Alonso, Ozoria, Drew Barrett and Jeff Kerian each provided two hits apiece. Lindsey Wilson out-hit St. Catharine 12-3 in the game.

Alonso extended his hitting streak to 19 games while Kerian blasted his fourth home run of the season.

The Patriots scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth only to have Lindsey Wilson answer with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

With the regular season, the Blue Raiders claim the tournament’s top seed and will share as co-host with Campbellsville (Ky.) University on the tournament’s opening day on April 26. The remainder of the tournament shifts to Campbellsville.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday, April 17, as the Blue Raiders travel to Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind.
