Former Knights head coach introduced as new coach of WV State | Bellarmine

BellarmineINSTITUTE, W. V.–Former Bellarmine head women’s basketball coach David Smith was announced as the new coach at West Virginia State today.

“We are excited at the opportunity to bring on board a coach of his caliber,” said West Virginia State University Athletic Director Sean Loyd in making the announcement. “We are all looking forward to working with Coach Smith.”

Smith spent the last 14 years at Bellarmine, posting a record of 249-156 to rank second on Bellamrine women’s basketball’s all-time wins list. In all, Smith has coached 30 years at the NCAA Division II level, having served eight seasons each at  Shippensburg University and at GLVC-member St. Joseph’s College.

Smith has compiled a career mark of 575-271, ranking him seventh all-time among NCAA Division II coaches in number of wins.

In 1996 he led Shippensburg to a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament. Altogether, Smith has taken squads to the NCAA tournament 14 times, including six trips while at Bellarmine, the most recent coming in 2008.
