Hoppers Move to First Place

Hopkinsville Hoppers 4, Marion Bobcats 2

The Hoptown Hoppers overtook the visiting Marion Bobcats for the top spot in the Ohio Valley League with a tight 4-2 win Sunday afternoon in Hopkinsville. Hopkinsville (5-2) scored a run in the first inning when Brett Pirtle led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Robert Friedlein’s single. The Hoppers added a run in the second inning when Matt McGowan hit a two-out single and scored on a deep single by Pirtle to give Hopkinsville a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Marion (5-3) plated two runs to knot the game at 2-2 when Michael Huddleston and Tyler Bonaventure led off the inning being hit by pitches. Both then attempted to steal bases, and Huddleston scored on the errant throw from the plate. Bonaventure scored the tying run on a balk to even the score.

Hoptown took the lead for good in the third inning when Bobby Clark walked, went to second on a passed ball, then scored on a single by Anthony Mazzella. The Hoppers added an insurance run in the eighth when Cameron Olson led off with a walk, went to second and third on passed balls, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Clark.

Phillip Menou got the win as a starter for the Hoppers, allowing two unearned runs on four hits, striking out eight and walking two in six innings. Michael Kratochvil got the save, allowing no runs on three hits, striking out two and walking three in the last three innings.

David Roper got the loss for the Bobcats, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out five and walking four in six innings. Jordan Lorenzo came on in the seventh inning, allowing an unearned run on no hits, striking out one and walking two in two innings.
