MAYFIELD, Ky. – The Mid-Continent University volleyball team knew going into play this weekend at the Missouri Baptist University Spartan Classic that it would be a tough weekend. Although the Cougars fought hard on the day, that proved to be the case as the Cougars (10-10) dropped a pair of matches in straight sets to the NAIA #20 Missouri Baptist Spartans (23-1) and the Bethel University (Tenn.) Missouri Baptist had lost their first match of the season on Wednesday evening, and they came out focused in the first set on Friday, taking the stanza 25-9. Mid-Continent came back in the final two sets, playing much better volleyball, but the Spartans were just too strong, as they took set number two 25-18, and the final set 25-15 to win the match 3-0.

In the day’s second match, the Cougars faced a familiar foe in fellow TranSouth member Bethel University (Tenn.).  Looking to avenge an earlier season loss to the Wildcats, the Cougars came out and battled hard, but late in the first set, Bethel mounted a 7-0 run to put the set away en route to a 25-15 win. A similar story unfolded in set number two, as Bethel used a 6-1 run to turn a 10-8 lead into a 16-9 advantage. Mid-Continent eventually closed to within three at 19-16, but Bethel pulled away to the finish, taking the set 25-17. In the final stanza, the Wildcats built a 20-9 lead, and coasted in from there, winning the frame 25-13 and the match 3-0.

Offensively for the Cougars, Kristin Selph notched double-digit kills in both matches, totalling 21 for the day. Rachel Brueggemandished out 15 assists in the day’s first match, and 11 more in the second tilt, with Gibson adding 14 assists against Bethel as well. Selph had 11 digs in the match against Bethel, recording her seventh double-double of the campaign. Alyssa Ybarra also had 12 digs against Bethel.
